As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s the perfect time to empower women with financial wisdom that can change their lives.
One fundamental principle that has led me to long-term financial security is paying myself first. This simple yet powerful concept helped me prioritize my financial future before tending to other expenses.
The “Pay Yourself First” Principle
I take inspiration from Uncle Sam.
The government doesn’t ask, “Hey, why don’t you take care of all your personal expenses—your mortgage, food bills, and whatever is left, you can pay in taxes?” Instead, Uncle Sam takes his share first and leaves the rest for you to manage.
Similarly, I adopted this strategy by saving before spending, ensuring my financial well-being remains a priority.
Three Essential Steps to “Paying Yourself First”
1. Automate Savings
One of the easiest ways to build wealth is through automation:
I set up automatic transfers to my savings account on payday.
I started with just 5% of my income and gradually increased it—this discipline created a lasting impact.
2. Address the Income vs. Expenses Gap
Sometimes, prioritizing savings created a financial shortfall, so I started to:
Increase my income through a part-time business.
Reduce unnecessary expenses by differentiating between needs and wants.
Tackle debt by paying off high-interest debt first to minimize total interest paid.
3. Invest in Your Financial Education
Due to a lack of awareness early in my career, I made many mistakes and lost money during market crashes. That is why I pursued a second career in the financial industry: to strengthen my knowledge.
I dedicated 30 minutes daily to reading, listening to experts, completing a course, and earning my professional financial services license.
Today, I not only manage my finances and have built multiple streams of income, but I also empower my friends, family, and community through financial education.
I offer free financial workshops and lunch & learn sessions for corporations, providing valuable insights to empower their employees.
This Month’s Challenge: Take Your First Step!
Start building your financial future today by setting up an automatic transfer to your savings—whether it’s $100, $500, or any amount that works for you.
Remember, achieving financial independence takes time, but it starts with deliberate and consistent actions.
Making the commitment to pay yourself first lays the groundwork for a secure financial future.
