Small Advice, Big Impact: The Value of Mentorship
Welcome to Smart Moves—where we focus on sharing how small decisions can lead to big results or help you take the leap into entrepreneurship or achieve your dreams.
Today, we will talk about the power of mentorship and how it can shape your journey. This morning, I was reflecting on how fortunate I have been to have mentors in my life. True mentorship is about value—bringing value to you, your life, your career, and your aspirations. It is about helping, trusting, and caring for you.
The Power of Timely Advice
When I first got the opportunity for a leadership role in my corporate career, I was hesitant. But my husband gave me one simple yet powerful piece of advice:
“Opportunities don’t always knock on your door, but when they do, and you feel it is right, take it.”
That advice set the stage for me to rise through the corporate ranks with confidence.
Years later, when I was contemplating a bold move from being an employee to business ownership, my then-boss, the founder and CEO of a FinTech company, said:
“As an employee, your income and options are limited. As an entrepreneur, your income and growth are unlimited. Not many are bold enough to take that step forward, but I am glad you are. I am confident you will thrive.“
That insight shifted my mindset completely, and I took the leap into entrepreneurship.
The Mentorship That Changed My Business
As I started my business, I was eager and focused on growing revenue and building my sales pipeline. Then, I met someone who had been extremely successful and ran a large organization in the financial services industry. He said,
“Focus on building teams. Building a scalable business.”
That one statement changed my business outlook. As a result, I built a sustainable business that continues to scale and grow exponentially.
His wisdom helped me build a business that thrives today. He continues to guide me, offering valuable insights that push me to new heights.
The 15-Minute Rule: A Game Changer
Every entrepreneur experiences ups and downs. But my mentor who I work with daily, taught me a crucial lesson that has kept me disciplined and focused: the 15-minute rule.
If you experience success, celebrate for 15 minutes, then get back to business.
If you face failure, cry for 15 minutes, then refocus on business.
This simple but powerful mindset shift has been instrumental in keeping me resilient and focused on the bigger picture.
The People Who Shape Your Journey
I also owe much of my journey to the person who introduced me to the financial industry. She helped me take my first steps, tolerated my stubbornness, and guided me into entrepreneurship.
I am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by successful people who constantly push me to scale new heights and challenge my thinking. I am deeply grateful to all of them for shaping me into who I am today.
Their impact came from the conversations we had and my willingness to seek their guidance and take action.
Take the First Step
All it takes is one step—one decision to seek guidance, to listen, and to act. When you do that, the entire world opens for you.
